On a particularly narrow 223 m² plot on the outskirts of Nicosia, we were invited to design a small residential complex of five apartments. One side of the site abuts an existing 1980s apartment block, introducing a distinctive constraint that shaped the brief.
Rather than adopting a conventional vertical arrangement in which apartments are stacked without interaction, we envisioned a ‘vertical’ neighborhood that encourages collective living. At the core of this concept is a three-dimensional grid—derived from the form of a rectangular prism—that serves as the spatial framework for accommodating the dwelling volumes.
Within this grid, five residential units are playfully arranged in varied configurations, creating multiple relationships not only among themselves but also with the broader urban context. The voids formed between them give rise to intimate in-between spaces: open-air courtyards that foster shared living, encourage social encounters, and generate unexpected visual connections—not only among residents but also with the surrounding neighborhood.
